Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The excursion leads to the Kaunertal Valley. Central themes are the climate change in Austria, glaciers, glacial and periglacial processes, and the resulting features as well as the glacier melting and the provided sediments. Focus will be the transport path of sediments from the glacier to the water reservoir and the impacts on its function. Landslides and debris flows will be observed along the valley and their hazardous potential as well as protective strategies discussed.
Last but not least, the anthropogenic reshaping of the landscape for summer and winter tourism will be subject during this excursion.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students will be enabled to detect (peri)glacial and mass movement features and know about their processes. They understand sediment dynamics in high mountain environments and can critically discuss and argument resulting hazards and conflicting use of the landscape.
