Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The following aspects are discussed: development of population geography and related disciplines, national and international sources of population data and problems of interpretation, aspects of population distribution, the analysis of population structure (age, sex, family and household, economic activity, social structure etc.), fertility - measurement and theories, spatial mobility/internal and international migration - measurement and theories, components of population change - measurement and theories, (regional) population projections, global trends of population change and selected aspects of population change in Austria.
Moreover each participant is required to produce a research paper on all relevant aspects of population change and structure in a small Austrian area.

Assessment and permitted materials

written exam, own analysis of population data sets and writing a paper

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

ability to discuss critically and use adequately basic theoretical concepts of population geography/spatial demography, ability to use basic methods and techniques of population geography/regional demography adequately.

Examination topics

Lecture units, independent analysis of demographic data sets, feedback and discussion of papers
