Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this seminar is to deal with the simultanous growth of poverty and richness both from an analytical and an empirical point of view.
The following topics will be discussed:
The causes of increasing inequalities in the income distribution and in the wealth distribution; statistical analysis of inequality; empirical analysis of increasing inequality in Austria, the European Union, the USA and in developing countries; the disappearance of the middle class in selected developing countries; long-run effects of polarisation; economic policy strategies against disintegration of society.
