Aims, contents and method of the course

Concept: Introduction into guiding principles and actual research fields of Political Geography.
Actual fields of research: Political conflicts concerning territorial power, local, national, global. Globalization effects and new international relations. Political conflicts around economic as well as ecological ressources. Regional conflicts and new social movements. Space patterns of collective political identity.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Knowledge of most important theories and concepts of Political Geography especially those of postmodernism as well as actual research fields shown along practical examples.
What is the meaning of Political Geography? A first introduction. Right and wrong ways in dealing with Political Geography versus Geopolitics 1895-2005, the discipline history. Political geographical analysis based on critical, neo-marxist and liberal onsets. Geographical conflict research/Radical Geography. Critical Geography. Real human space and constructed imaginations. Deconstructiion of the archeology of power symbols.
