Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives: The course "Open Minds I" aims to provide students with perspectives and innovative formats to identify, understand, and contextualize various dimensions of global change and sustainability in both research and practice. Participants will be equipped to develop strategies and competencies for independently tackling current geographical challenges, understanding controversial positions, and discussing as well as presenting scientific findings. The seminar aims to foster curiosity, ambition, and the desire to actively participate in shaping these discussions.

Content: The course focuses on developing a "Personal Intellectual Project" (PIP) that will accompany students throughout their studies. Other topics covered in the course include personal responsibility, teamwork, and intercultural communication, as well as an in-depth engagement with issues of global change and sustainability. Through working on their own projects, students learn to internalize their ideas and research findings and communicate them to others.

Methodology: The course relies on interactive and student-centered formats that promote 21st-century skills such as creativity, communication, and collaboration. Under guidance, students work individually and in groups on their projects. The use of "Liberating Structures" and peer feedback fosters a dynamic learning environment that encourages creativity and critical thinking. This approach motivates students to actively engage in their learning journey and continuously develop their personal projects.

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course aims to open up perspectives and innovative formats for students to recognise, understand and classify different dimensions of global change and sustainability in research and practice.
The course should thereby enable students to develop strategies and competences for the independent elaboration of current geographical challenges, to understand controversial positions and to discuss scientific findings and results; as well as to present them and make them accessible to a broad public.
The event will thus be about:
- Strengthening and fostering curiosity, ambition and the desire to participate in shaping;
- To define and elaborate an own "intellectual" project for the coming years, which lies in the thematic field of global change and sustainability;
- To strengthen the so-called 21st Century Skills: creativity, communication skills, collaboration.
The course will be mainly based on interactive formats; students will work out topics and formats independently - individually and in groups - under guidance.
