Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course students will be confronted with various components of spatial planning and developent on a European scale. The legal competence for planning is with the national states. Nevertheless, the European Union has impact on spatial development through sector policies (e.g. agriculture, environment, transport and energy, regional policy etc.) as well as informal (e.g. ESDP, Territorial Agenda etc.) and formal (Territorial Cohesion given in the EU Treaty of Lisbon) concepts. Within this frame, different European planning cultures and understandings will be discussed.

Assessment and permitted materials

The marking will be derived from sufficient attendance, active participation, home exercises and final examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The main objective is to give a detailed insight into European spatial development, their actors, structures and characteristics.

Examination topics

Regular attendance of the course is obligatory. The active participation also from the side of the students is required. During the semester, the students will work through a literature list and may accomplish some small home exercises. The main thematical inputs will be provided by the lecturer. Still, there will be enough time for discussion.
