Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Qualitative research methods have always had their own role in the social sciences and also in thematic fields of vulnerability and migration research. In recent years, on the one hand, the traditional divide between quantitative and qualitative methods has narrowed (and a tendency towards mixed-methods research designs is observable), while on the other hand, research using qualitative methods and coming from more qualitative paradigms is increasingly recognised in hence more quantitative domains. In human-environment research and in the nexus of migration and environmental change, qualitative methods and their implementation are therefore becoming more important.

The aim of the course is for participants to gain a comprehensive understanding of qualitative research in the context of migration and environmental change. This includes knowledge of basic paradigms, research designs and approaches; an overview of important qualitative methods for data collection and analysis; in-depth knowledge of individual, selected methods; and applicable knowledge of how to combine individual methods meaningfully in a research design.
In detail, after attending the course, participants should:
- know different basic types of research designs and their use cases;
- have an overview of the range of different qualitative methods of data collection and data analysis;
- understand the advantages and disadvantages (in terms of content and practice) of individual methods and what is particularly important in their application;
- have tried out individual methods and learned them in depth;
- have basic knowledge of how different methods (qualitative, but also in combination with quantitative) can be usefully combined in (MMR=mixed-methods-research) research designs;
- be able to develop a meaningful combination of research paradigm, research questions, methods of data collection and analysis, and knowledge generation on a given topic.

The exercise will consist of lecturer inputs, interactive group work and participant contributions. Participants will work individually and in groups to develop methods and their combinations and to develop a solid research design under guidance.

Assessment and permitted materials

- regular and active participation in the course (at least 80% of the sessions),
- independent research work,
- individual or group familiarisation with, implementation and presentation of methods of data collection and analysis (oral and written abstract),
- individual draft of a research design for a real or fictitious project (written).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in at least 80 percent of the seminar sessions. In the case of illnesses, which are proven with a medical certificate, or in the case of other justified absences, absences in excess of this can be compensated for by additional written assignments.

The presentation of the methods and the written elaboration of a research design each count for 50 percent of the grade. Both partial performances must be passed independently of each other for a positive final assessment. The performances are passed if they have been assessed with at least the grade 4.
Grading key:
100 - 86 % - Grade 1
85 - 71 % - Grade 2
70 - 56 % - Grade 3
55 - 41 % - Grade 4
40 - 0 % - Grade 5
A grading scale for the written assignments can be viewed on Moodle and will be explained separately in the seminar.

Examination topics

The examination material includes the analysis, presentation and discussion of relevant literature and documents on the topic, the independent research of sources and materials, the presentation of these work results and their written elaboration.

Reading list

All texts of the compulsory reading can be downloaded in Moodle or copied from the reference collection in the institute library.
