Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The tour will be conducted in English and aims to introduce students to identifying, calculating and mitigating flood hazards and risks. This one-day cycling tour around the Danube Island serves as a basis for discussing flood hazards and risks. Participants should bring their bikes, lunch, and snacks.
Assessment and permitted materials
The assessment will be composed of three evaluations: a pre-excursion essay, a report on the excursion, and a discussion essay. See below the description of the evaluations:1) A one-page essay on the history of the Danube Island, to be submitted one week before the excursion (until 31.12.2024) - one essay by a student. This essay makes up 30% of the final grade.2) The report on the excursion learned topics would be written in groups (2-3 people) - one report by group. Students should record their observations collected during the excursion and their analysis of the group discussions. For this reason, students must pay attention to their own notes and pictures.
The report will represent 50% of the final grade and will be divided according to the following criteria (expressed as a percentage):
- Overall impression: 10
- Format and references: 10
- Content and discussion (quality of analysis of the excursion content): 303) In the discussion essay, you should choose another study area that suffers from floods and discuss similarities and differences in the flood mitigation strategies. You can also present possible strategies verified in Vienna that could be replicated in the study area. You can choose a study area recently affected by floods, such as Southeast Asia, Spain, Brazil, Sudan, Lybia, Germany, among others. This essay will represent 20% of the final grade and will be written in groups (up to 5 people) - one essay by group (up to 3 pages).
