Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Case study analysis represents a core method in applied geography. Taking examples from ongoing research or examples from the academic literature, this course provides students with knowledge on case study methods and analysis. It is structured so that students get familiar, learn and discuss case study tools and formulate their own guidelines frame for their research.

The course is designed around six thematic sessions - each supported by one or two research pieces (journal articles to be read prior to classes):
1. What is a case study, how to choose a case study, case study vs. place study
2. Collecting evidence 1
3. Collecting evidence 2
4. Collecting evidence 3
5. Analyzing and presenting data
6. Limits to the case study method

The last three sessions will be dedicated to the synthesis of the lessons learned during sessions 1 to 6. Each student will present one point that she/he wants to develop in her/his research project.

Assessment and permitted materials

Mandatory readings will be provided for each session. Students will be expected to participate actively in the discussion.
Each participant writes a case study guideline related to her/his Masters’ thesis, which considers elements presented and discussed in class. Students present one of these points in class and receive feedbacks from their peers.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

1. Case study guideline: structure, case study selection and presentation, tools presentation, expected outcomes (60%)
2. In class presentation (30%)
3. Participation: preparatory readings and discussions / feedback (10%)

Examination topics

Readings, course content, active participation, critical thinking, creativity, writing and enthusiasm are important elements to consider for the evaluation.
