Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The content of the course is the teaching of content and methodological basics for the simple uni- and bivariate analysis of physio- and humangeographical data sets with the program package Excel.

Objectives: The students
... know central methods and differences of data collection, sampling, and data summarization in physio- and human-geographical research.
... master the most important functionalities necessary for statistical data analysis with Excel.
... can adequately prepare data for uni- and bivariate analyses in Excel.
... are able to summarize data sets using univariate and bivariate descriptive statistics and prepare them in the form of simple tables, charts and graphs (in Excel).
... know the role of sampling error in hypothesis testing and can perform T-test, analysis of variance and chi-square test.
... can interpret the results correctly and summarize them in a linguistically understandable way.

Method: Blocked course with integration of lecture and exercise parts. Parallel processing of a physio- as well as a human-geographically relevant data set.
The exercises will be done on the PC in the GIS-Lab. Excel will be used as the program package.
The central functionalities of Excel will be taught in a tutorial during the first week.

To consolidate what has been learned, independent exercise work (homework) is to be handed in.
Additional support for the implementation: script as well as tutorials.

Examination topics

Exercises with Excel on the different methods.

Final exam on theoretical and methodological basics as well as on the interpretation of results.
