Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The excursion goes to the peripheric and economically weak, but very scenic and due to their multiethnic structure especially interesting parts of Slovakia, to Ukrainian Transcarpathia [Zakarpattja] and across the Ukrainian Carpathians to L'vìv, the centre of West Ukraine and the former capital of the Austrian crownland Galicia.
Dominating topics will be multicultural history and present by the examples of the Slovakian towns Banská Býstrica, Bardejov (UNESCO World Heritage), Prešov, Košice and in the Spiš region, which had been influenced by German culture, as well as by the examples of Orthodox Ukrainians and Greek-Catholic Rusins, Hungarians and Roma in Slovakia; urban development and multicultural structure of the today Ukrainian city L'vìv; settlement and population structure of predominantly rural valleys and basins in the Carpathians; various forms of tourism as they occur in the High Tatra region (recreative and sports tourism), in the Spiš region, in Bardejov and L'vìv (cultural tourism) as well as along the Slovakian-Polish border (price-induced cross-border tourism); socio-economic spatial disparities in Slovakia; and last but not least a cross-section through the geology of the Carpathians from the Vulcanogenic inner zone through the Cristalline of the Tatra up to the wide external zone of Flysch, in which the Mesozoic Klippen zone of the Pieniny with the water gap and gorge of the Dunajec is inserted.
