Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Dealing with complex societal challenges requires the interplay of often radical economical, technological, institutional, social and ecological innovations that are accompanied by structural change processes. Societal functions in the fields of mobility, living and energy, healthcare and modern food supply become increasingly affected by technological change. The application and consequently also the functionality of modern technologies are closely related to existing organisations and regulations, consumption patterns, cultural circumstances and knowledge in the system under consideration.
The reshaping of social and technical elements in our consumption and production patterns is triggered by the emergence of innovative technologies, e.g. the upcoming new standard 5G, the key technology for the internet of things. Such disruptive innovations often serve as a catalysts for the recombination of existing solutions by what new target groups and application cases become accessible. In the case of 5G it is wireless networking and a reliable control of machines which enable for instance the operation of drones in civil protection, self-driving cars or applications in the wide field of Smart Cities.
The main focus of the field trip are publicly supported ‘real testing areas’ and ‘living labs’ that enable the development, testing and realisation of innovative solutions for complex concepts, processes and technologies from science and industry in cooperation with citizens, policy makers and civil servants and many more actors. Moreover, we examine the opening of the innovation process through active strategic use of external ideas from research and science, industry and civil society.
It is planned to spend three days of the field trip in Vienna and one day in Upper Austria.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation every day of the field trip, a textual contribution and an oral presentation of the prepared research:
The research results will serve as expert contribution for the group between meetings and during travel. Beside the short presentation a textual contribution must be prepared. This can be done as part of a small group (2 students) or as individual.
Further details of the assignment will be communicated to the participants within good time.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

It is expected that students prepare material for the field trip independently.
Students should be able to present and critically reflect on the results of their written analysis on-site using appropriate materials (e.g. handouts, illustrations).
Active participation (contributions and punctuality) every day of the field trip is considered a basic condition for positive final results.

Examination topics

Active participation is a basic condition for a positive result.
Both the presentation materials as well as the written contribution will be used for the assessment.
