The seminary aims at highlighting the relations between language, space and society from the geographical perspective and by examples mainly from the eastern part of Europe. Major aspects of this thematic field are the diverging conceptual and linguistic subdivision and resolution of complex reality by different cultures which is a.o. due to economic activities and natural environment; the rise and fall of languages as well as their internal development with a focus on reasons for these dynamics; different functions of language (standard language - colloquial language - dialect; family language - colloquial language - official language - military language - sacred language; lingua franca, educational language); social stratification of language and social subgroups characterized by linguistic specifics; superimposition of languages (e.g. Russian over national languages in Ukraine, Belorussia, Moldavia); problems of linguistic minorities and small standard languages; geographical names.
