The excursion focuses on the structures of US American cities and metropolitan areas, emphasizing contemporary issues and strategies of urban policy. Miami and New Orleans will serve as examples to examine these issues from various perspectives, including disciplines like urban history, sociology, geography, economics and urban planning. This is supposed to provide a basis for a deeper understanding of contemporary urban problems. Another aim is to compare the roles of urban planning and the private sector with regard to generating urban problems and the efficiency at resolving them. A socio-spatial approach analysing the interrelationships of individuals and ethnic, social and cultural groups is aimed at understanding issues of diversity, equality, and structured inequality in US American urban landscapes. In the course of the excursion specific issues of urban planning and development will be presented and discussed by local experts. The participants will be involved in this discourse by presenting and discussing their findings and ideas evolved in the preparations of the exkursion.ECTS credit points: 3.0
