Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces the students to the concept of futures studies in climate change adaptation (theoretical background as well as various methods). In particular, the course gives an introduction to the differences between various scenario techniques and approaches, point out the advantages and disadvantages (uncertainty and risk) of each method as well as to select a suitable scenario method for a specific problem. The course is split into a lecture part which introduces students to the basic theoretical background of scenario planning and a practical part, where students learn to implement scenario planning. This course contains three main learning outcomes: (1) an overview of scenario planning theory and concepts, (2) an exploration of the applications of the method (quantitative/qualitative) in various sub-fields of climate change adaptation, and (3) an examination of some of the modelling tools used for scenario planning.

Assessment and permitted materials

Seminar paper, presentation and discussion, presence and contributions to the discussion in the classroom.
- Seminar paper with around 5,000 words (60%)
- Class presentation and discussion (30%)
- Contribution to the discussions in the classroom (10 %)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance in at least 80% of the course sessions. In the case of illnesses that are confirmed by a doctor's note, additional absenteeism can be compensated by additional written assignments.
Minimum requirements: Willingness to search, read, discuss and present in english topics about scenario techniques in climate change and natural hazards..
Grading scheme:
100 - 87,5 % - grade 1
87,5 - 75 % - grade 2
75 - 62,5 % - grade 3
62,5 - 50 % - grade 4
less than 50% - grade 5

An additional grading scheme for presentation and term papers can be downloaded from the Moodle platform and will be explained at the beginning of the course.
