Aims, contents and method of the course

Objective: Permafrost means a thermal condition where ground material stays at or below 0°C for at least two years. To a large extent it is controlled by climatic conditions. Besides a wide distribution in high latitudes, permafrost exists at the periglacial zones of high mountains, such as the Alps. The extent of permafrost varies as climate changes. Thus, since the end of the Late Glacial period a degradation of mountain permafrost has happened. In the course of the last years this process caused a lot of trouble for the statics of installations, as lodge buildings, cable cars etc. and increaesed the exposure of natural hazards. In particular frequency and magnitude of rockfall and debris flows have changed, as the stability of bedrock and debris is due to the defrosting of soil ice reduced. The advanced level lecture focusses on ecology, spread, spatial-temporal development, methods of mapping and modelling as well as on the consequences of permafrost degradation and resulting hazards in the Alps.
Concept: The lecture will give the students time to ask questions and to discuss problems.
