Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar consists of a mixture of lecture, discussion and processing of specific tasks.

In brief inputs of the course instructors, an overview on research methods and the differentiation of mixed methods research from triangulation and multi-methods research is given. Based on this, a mixed methods project will be developed with the students.

The aim is to develop a basic understanding of the logic and applicability of mixed methods research, especially in the following areas:
a) knowledge about mixed-methods research and assessment of the applicability of quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods approaches for specific questions;
b) competences regarding fundamental considerations and working steps in the development of a research concept (epistemological access, data availability, data types, method selection)
c) basic competencies in the application of mixed methods research (data analysis, linking of methods and presentation of results)

Methods: Lecture and interactive discussion formats; reading and discussing methodological texts; acquiring and testing knowledge in individual works; research practice and reflection in self-organized small groups on the basis of a project example

Assessment and permitted materials

1) Reading of short introductory texts and active participation in the discussions (20%)
2) Individual assignment (15%)
3) Final presentation (15%)
4) Final report (50%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular attendence throughout the semester, regular participation in discussions, submission of assignments (individual assignment) final presenation and final report (group assignment). In order to receive a passing grade, you need at least 60%. (100-90%: 1; 89-80%: 2, 79-70%: 3, 69-60%: 4)

Examination topics

Short assignments, in-class discussions, final presentation and final report of self-conducted Mixed Methods reserach project.
