Aims, contents and method of the course

In their daily work, geoinformatics scientists are confronted with data from different collection methods and processes. The processing of such data for the purpose of homogenization and refinement, in conjunction with the requirement to achieve ever higher degrees of automation, can only be achieved by using powerful tools. The program FME (Feature Manipulation Engine) of the company Safe Software is such a tool and has long since attained the status of a universal "toolbox" in geoinformation. With the support of more than 400 different data formats, a central data hub is available, which can be extended to individualized workspaces by an extensive set of functions, so-called "transformers". Such workspaces can be combined with each other and integrated into automated processing processes.
This course gives participants the basic know-how to use FME Desktop in their daily work. The central program modules are presented and their application possibilities are explained in practice. The emphasis is on learning workspace authoring with FME Workbench. On the basis of practical examples, central functions are presented, program routines are created for typical tasks and the linking of them to complex work processes is demonstrated.
In classroom teaching, lecture blocks alternate with practical exercises to apply theoretical knowledge. In the case of corona-related changeover to distance learning, the focus is placed on practical work with FME and the theoretical development is handed over to the students on their own responsibility.

Assessment and permitted materials

• Final thesis: Independent creation of an FME workspace including a textual description of the algorithm
• Intermediate work: Independent application of the acquired know-how in given tasks
• Quick Theory check at the end of every module (6 in total)
• Attendance (physical and mental) from the first unit

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

• Completed bachelor's degree
• Basic knowledge of spatial data processing with GIS systems is required.
• Rudimentary programming skills as well as know-how in the areas of data management and data homogenization are advantageous, but not essential.
• Final Thesis: 50%
• Intermediate work: 30%
• Ongoing active participation (attendance, theory check, ...): 20%

A positive conclusion is given from an overall rating of more than 51%. A maximum of two units may be missed!

Examination topics

Immanent examination character: Alternate lecture and practical exercise in the GIS laboratory. At the end of each module there are short theory checks (multiple choice).
The interim work should show the understanding of the taught content. The difficulty is increasing depending on the task. Interim work must be submitted within a maximum of two weeks.
The final thesis has the creation of a test workspace for the acceptance of a photogrammetric building restitution as content, and is implemented as teamwork. In addition to the implementation of the workspace, a documentation including description of the applied algorithms is part of the thesis too.
