Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course offers an introduction to questions of regional development in the different peripheral and rural regions of Austria. We will deal with questions that are region-specific, we will take an in-depth look at regional potentials and institutions and we will analyse how projects are implemented. In doing so, we will draw on perspectives from human, social and economic geography, spatial planning, regional policy and regional development. Essentially we will be dealing with different models of regional development, comparing them (e.g. centre vs. periphery) and discussing current examples of regional development in Austria.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance of all appointments, active participation (especially for tracking, in interviews and in conversations/discussions), repetition of relevant literature, short presentation during field trip (including hand-out), written group work.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

1. To heighten participants' awareness of questions of regional development in different peripheral and rural areas of Austria and related problems and chances. 2. To get to know institutions and analyse relevant literature. 3. To gain practical experience of using methods of empirical social research: interviews using questionnaires, interviews with experts.
