Aims, contents and method of the course

Starting with an overview on current strategies in dealing with natural hazards, relevant processes and their quantification will be discussed. Factors influencing the disposition and triggering factors will be highlighted, as well as modelling of processes including the underlying physical mechanisms. Furthermore, problems arising when dealing with intensity and probability will be presented.
The ideas behind the concept of integral risk management, above all risk assessment as well as the planning and implementation of technical and non-technical mitigation measures will be presented. The lecutere will end with a discussion of possibilities in risk transfer mechanisms, including the relevance of insurances against losses arising from natural hazards.
The aim of the lecture is to provide the students a sound understanding of natural hazards in alpine regions.
This course will be supported by e-learning, you will need a valid unet account.
