Aims, contents and method of the course

The course addresses the use of New Media in the geospatial sciences and the theory and practice of the application of multimedia to cartography. The theory related to interactive multimedia, the World Wide Web (WWW) and the tools for publishing will be outlined and production methods explored. It has as its aim the establishment and development of key theories and practices in the contemporary use of multimedia and scientific visualization tools and their application to the geospatial sciences. Lectures establish and develop key theories and practices in the contemporary use of multimedia in the geospatial sciences. Theory covered are the areas of the history of communications and media, the concepts and applications of hypermedia, multimedia and distributed interactive multimedia. It addresses the use of New Media and its application to the delivery of contemporary geospatial information products.

The course also covers aspects related to the theory and practice of the application of multimedia to cartography. It covers the areas of the history of multimedia and the parallel development associated with the history of multimedia cartography; the concepts and applications of hypermedia, distributed multimedia and discrete multimedia; the architecture of multimedia; and tools for interface design, interaction, sound and animation. Other areas covered are design, communication systems, standards, authoring and evaluation of multimedia products.
