Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture course builds upon the basic knowledge acquired in the undergraduate course on urban geography. It aims at extending geographical urban research with important theories and findings from other social sciences doing urban research. At the beginning of the course, you have the opportunity to co-determine the themes that will be addressed in the lecture.
You may choose from the following themes: (1) the "urban question" in 19th century social science (MARX, WEBER, DURKHEIM, SIMMEL), (2) social reportage around 1900 (BOOTH, RIIS, OSTWALD, Max WINTER, KLÄGER, PARK), (3) from Community Power Research (HUNTER, DAHL) to Urban Growth Machines (MOLOTCH, HARDING) and Urban Regime Theory, (4) new inequalities (KRECKEL), new lifestyles in the city (SCHULZE et al.), (5) New Cultural Geography of the City (CRANG, MITCHELL, Daaniel MILLER et al.), Festivalisation (HÄUSSERMANN-SIEBEL), Disneyfication of the city (ROOST), (7) City and literature (CORBINEAU-HOFFMANN), (8) City and city-guides (BOCKHORN), (9) city and the cinema (CLARKE, SHIEL-FITZMAURICE).
