Aims, contents and method of the course

The course “History of Cartography II” deals with the period from the end of the 16th century up to the 20th century. The main focus will be on Dutch Cartography of the 17th century, the French cartography of the 17th and 18th century (Cassinis, Guillaume Delisle, Rigobert Bonne etc.), the German Atlas-cartography (Homann and Homännische Erben), the methodic innovations of the 18th and 19th century, the thematic cartography and the Austrian cartography (Georg Matthäus Vischer, Peter Anich, Military cartography, map-publishing houses etc.).
The objective of the course is to teach the basics of the history of cartography. After completion of the course the students should be able to
- interpret old maps and use as sources
- divide maps into different periods of time
- understand the development of world and regional maps
- name scientific centers of map productions
- overview the development of Austrian and German cartography
- know the methodological innovations

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam at the end of the semester.
