Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will be held in Southern Spain. This area is exceptionally rich in Mediterranean vegetation types including evergreen sclerophyllous vegetation, summergreen forests, semi-deserts and steppes. The main aim of this course is to introduce students to these vegetation types and their characteristic species.

Assessment and permitted materials

50% active participation
25% first interim test (knowledge of most relevant plant species)
25% second interim test (knowledge of most relevant plant species)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students are able to recognise and define the main Mediterranean vegetation zones as well as the major vegetation types and their constituent species. Furthermore, the students are well acquainted with different biogeographic aspects of the Mediterranean area, especially with respect to both current climatic-geological conditions and historical processes and can assess their influence on diversity and endemism patterns in this region.

Examination topics

Field course with predominant demsonstration character; autonomous processing of plant material by the students using relevant literature
