Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Introductory lecture to the basic principles of the embryonic development in animals. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LECTURE WILL BE GIVEN IN ENGLISH.
We will introduce the basic principles and the control mechanisms regulating animal development. We will cover the following topics:
- Questions of developmental biology
- A brief overview of the early animal development
- Molecular basics of developmental biology
- The driving forces of morphogenesis
- Pattern formation in development
- Development of selected vertebrates (fish, amphibians, birds, mammals)
- Development of model invertebrates (Drosophila, Caenorhabditis, Sea urchins, tunicates, cnidarians)
- Stem cells

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam consisting of 4 free-form questions with a maximum of 5 points per question.
The exam can be written in English or German - whichever the student prefers.
The duration of the exam is 60 minutes; the use of books, notes, electronic devices or any other types of aids is not permitted.
There will be 4 exam dates distributed over the next two semesters. Please check u:space for dates and locations.

Examination topics

The exam questions focus on the understanding of the developmental principles and processes, based on specific experiments and animal models that are presented during the lecture.
