Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will guide students through the processes of finding, reading, and understanding scientific papers in English. Students will practice writing and speaking about scientific research in two weekly class meetings.
Course activities will include reading scientific papers, understanding the reasoning and logic in a scientific presentation, writing various kinds of scientific reports and other communications, and informal speaking on topics from the literature.

Assessment and permitted materials

In-class discussions and group work on reading and writing assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Evaluation is based on attendance and participation in class (50%) and completion of homework assignments (50%). Attendance is required: two absences (excused or unexcused) will be allowed before your grade is affected (approx. 1 grade point per two additional absences).

There will be weekly reading and homework assignments, some of which will include a written assignment to be collected in class. These will account for 1/2 of the final mark.

Examination topics

Discussion and presentation of homework exercises and in-class group work.

Reading list

Readings will be assigned each week.
