Aims, contents and method of the course

With this course the students acquire
- an overview of the historical development of nature conservation
- an insight into cultural, legal and economic basics
- an orientation in the field of environmental history in general.

The following topics will be covered:
- Current problems of nature conservation and environmental protection and their backgrounds from an environmental history persepctive
- The 20th century as a special phase of history: Anthropocene, Great Acceleration, 1950s Syndrome
- Basics of the change of biodiversity: from the Columbian exchange to the 6th mass extinction
- Perception as a basis for environmental action
- Environmental history of Austria and history of nature and environmental protection
- Cultural basics of management in nature and environmental protection
- Economic evaluation methods in the ecological-economic model

In the courses, lecture phases alternate with interactive group phases; the latter include group discussions as well as joint work with historical sources and materials.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination with a total of 14 compulsory and optional questions (2 for each LV unit), of which at least 9 must be answered. The questions will be open-ended and scored according to a point system.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At least 9 questions (3 compulsory questions + 6 optional questions) must be answered. A maximum of 4 points is awarded per question. In order to be evaluated positively, a minimum of 18 points must be achieved.
31-36 points: Sehr Gut
27-30,5 points: Gut
23-26,5 points: Befriedigend
18-22,5 points: Genügend
<18 points: Nicht Genügend
