Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Goal of this class is a basic introduction into limnic ecosystems. Subsequent to a successful and active participation, students will be able to comparatively describe and differentiate inland waters by their major abiotic and biotic characteristics.
This class offers an introduction into the genesis and structure of limnic ecosystems (groundwater, springs, running water, and lakes). Furthermore, their importance in the global water cycle, their morphology, as well as its overall chemical, physical and biological characteristics will be tackled. We will go through current concepts of classification and typology. Central content is the importance of organisms and biodiversity for geochemical cycles. With all aspects, we will also discuss current anthropogenic pressures (global and climate change) to inland waters.
All students are invited to actively participate via discussion, questions and quiz rounds.
