Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
With the breakthrough of next generation DNA sequencing methods and their application to environmental samples, metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequences have indelibly expanded the known DNA and protein sequence space to non-culturable micro-organisms and environmental communities. This practical seminar introduces the major computational methods necessary to process, analyse and interpret shotgun metagenomic sequences. Basic knowledge in Bioinformatics and Genomics (as e.g. teached in lecture 300311) are required for participation in this seminar.
Assessment and permitted materials
Report (to be written in workgroups).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Participants learn in this practical seminar how to pre-process environmental sequences (i.e. estimation and correction of sequencing errors), how to estimate taxonomic diversity in metagenomic and metatranscriptomic samples and how to investigate the function and taxonomy of environmental sequences.
Examination topics
This practical seminar will consist of theoretical (lecture like) introductions to the topics, discussion of selected scientific papers and practical exercises in the computer room.
Reading list
Will be provided during the seminar.
