Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This special course offers training for identification of rotifers and branchiopods (cladocerans) of European water bodies. It includes theory on morphology and anatomy, physiology and ecology, habitat and geographical distribution, economic value, taxonomy and phylogeny of both groups. The laboratory work includes observation of living animals and narcotizing, preparation and illustration technics, calculation of biomass and identification of Rotatoria and Cladocera. The different habitats occupied by planktonic and benthic rotifers and cladocerans as well as the different sampling technics will be explained in the field.
The first 3 laboratories will treat cladocerans, the last 3 rotifers.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam about the biology of these animal groups (30 %) and identification of various species of cladocerans of the collection and of rotifers of a water sample at the laboratory (60 %). Active participation on the laboratories and on the excursion (10 %).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Examination topics

Each unit includes a theoretical introduction to the biology of the groups and a laboratory part teaching practical methods of micro-dissection and taxonomy of the species. The active participation during the laboratory work and the excursion will be valued.
