Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course demonstrates dry grassland habitats and its species in the Pannonian Region examplified for threatened vascular plants (at the species and population level). Typical species, their strategies and their habitats are presented during field work, exercising methods for species inventories and monitoring. Furthermore current concepts and methods of plant population and reproduction biology are discussed in the context of grazing management and conservation measures of dry grassland systems.
Assessment and permitted materials
Participation in field & lab work and final report including a concise presentation of findings.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students acquire fundamental knowledge of Pannonian dry grasslands regarding species and populations as well as their functional strategies. Specific methods of vegetation ecology and plant population dynamics will enable them to identify protection targets and define measures for conservation of species (communities) and populations.
Examination topics
Basic and advanced methods of inventory and monitoring of species and populations will be presented. Studies on population structure, regional dynamics and mating systems of selected plant species will be conducted during field work. Statistical analysis including matrix population models will be used for evaluating management measures.
