Aims, contents and method of the course


The seminar is the accompanying seminar for the biology didactics master's thesis. We strongly recommend completing "Masterkolloquium 1," which is always offered in the summer semester, before "Masterkolloquium 2," offered in the winter semester. This seminar addresses the fundamentals of subject-specific research in biology and environmental studies, covering methodological basics for master's theses working on questions related to biology didactics research. This includes, for example, quantitative and qualitative research methods as well as the basics of scientific writing. Current issues, methods, and results of biology didactics research at the University of Vienna are presented and discussed.

The seminar is intended for students who want to write their master's thesis in biology didactics. Options include empirical work (work involving data collection, usually with students) or developmental work (in which, for example, new teaching materials are developed). Within the "Masterkolloquium 1" seminar, master's thesis topics will be assigned, meaning it is not mandatory to already have a topic confirmed before the seminar begins. However, participation in the seminar does not guarantee that supervision of the master's thesis will be automatically undertaken!

The subject areas for which master's theses are currently being assigned will be added here shortly.

Students have the opportunity to present their planned or ongoing subject-specific master's theses in the form of presentations. Collegial feedback and specific methodological input from us and your colleagues should help further develop these theses. Additionally, you will prepare an exposé. Scientists from both domestic and international backgrounds are invited and will provide insights into international biology didactics research

Assessment and permitted materials

Active Participation

Oral contributions in the form of PowerPoint presentations, known as an "Elevator Pitch": 5 minutes presentation, followed by a 10-minute discussion.

Written exposé (5 DIN A4 pages, including literature, if applicable, illustrations/tables, and schedule).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

*Support for students in their biology education research projects (master's theses and dissertations) through methodological input and collegial feedback
*Engagement with current research methods and findings in biology education
*Exchange and networking with the scientific community
