Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture covers the basics requested to understand and work in the field of aquatic microbial ecology. The topics are not restricted to the ecology of procaryotes but also deal with microprotozoa and viruses.. Starting from the concept of thermodynamics and the principles of energy flow, it is shown how the links between.the various microbial compartments contribute to the functioning of aquatic ecosystems in general.
