Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course enables participants who already have a basic knowledge of scientific writing in the field of biology (e.g. structure of scientific papers/articles and basics of scientific writing) to independently write text parts of a scientific paper, to revise them and to reflect on these revisions under experienced guidance. The course does not require any special prerequisites - however, participation in the basic course "300171 UE Science Writing & Communication" is recommended if no corresponding basic knowledge from a comparable course is available. The course is divided into three days: (Day 1:) after a short review of the basics, a topic will be chosen for which each participant will write a title page and a one-page introduction to a scientific topic; (Day 2:) the written texts will be commented on, discussed and revised individually and in the group; and (Day 3:) the corrected, final text versions will be discussed. The participants will be familiarized with the review process of scientific texts in the field of biology and should be able to write more efficient texts that will be reviewed more positively. The selection of the texts is either based on existing topics of the participants (e.g. existing master thesis topic) or on topics that can be chosen independently in the course or can be given. In addition to this course, two further block courses "Science Writing and Communication" and "Scientific Writing Workshop" are offered (see ufind for details).
Assessment and permitted materials
For a positive assessment, attendance and active participation on all three course days is required. Specifically, attendance and active participation in the exercises in the course (50%) and active participation in assignments between the courses (50%) are included in the assessment.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Prerequisite for participation in the course is a timely online registration. Completing the course with a positive assessment requires active participation on all three course days as well as timely and complete submission of all in- and between-course exercises. Participants can work on the assignments independently using the documents provided in the course units and via Moodle. They are actively supported in this by the course leaders.
Examination topics
The course can be positively completed by attendance on all three course days, as well as a timely and complete submission of the exercises in and between the course days. A separate examination does not take place.
