This class offers an introduction into the genesis and structure of groundwater (aquifers) and groundwater-dependent and groundwater-associated ecosystems (springs, wetlands). Furthermore, their importance in the global water cycle, their morphology, as well as its overall chemical, physical and biological characteristics will be tackled. We will go through current concepts of classification and typology. Central content is the importance of organisms and biodiversity for geochemical cycles. With all aspects, we will also discuss current anthropogenic pressures (global and climate change) to subterranean aquatic ecosystems.
All students are invited to actively participate via discussion, questions and quiz rounds.
The lectures will be held in German, but the slides are in English.
