Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The class introduces students in the ecology of the Siberian biomes. During the excursion all major vegetation zones, from the steppe in the South, through forest steppe, southern, middle and northern Taiga, to the Tundra at the mound of the Ob river, will be visited. The field course will take place in the tundra and focus on the interaction of vegetation, soils and nutrient dynamics at different spatial scales.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will plan and carry out a project, that they will present orally and in written form at the end of the class. This will be complemented by a literature seminar.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This class aims at familiarizing students with the biomes of Western Siberia, especially with the carbon cycling in these systems. Carbon pools, that are relevant at the ecosystem scale (i.e. soils and vegetation) and carbon fluxes (CO2 gas exchange and losses of dissolved organic carbon) will be comparatively analyzed with field methods and in the laboratory.

Examination topics

Exerimental field work (e.g., measurement of the ecosystem CO2 exchange) and analytical work in the laboratory (e.g., measurements of the nutrient status)
