Aims, contents and method of the course
This course confronts students with key ecosystem processes of alpine ecoystems of different elevation and vegetation composition. We will use modern methods in both field ecology and laboratory ecology.
Assessment and permitted materials
Practical work in the field and in the laboratory. Presentation of group work in oral and written form. Written report (60%), practical work and oral presentation (40%)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This class aims at a deeper understanding of the major terrestrial ecosystem processes and functions, and helps understand the many intimate links between water, carbon and nutrients cycles on the example of alpine ecosystems.
Examination topics
Practical work in the field combined with chemical analyses in the laboratory. Oral presentation (seminar). Students will undertake measurements of ecosystem gas exchange (water and carbon dioxide), analyze the biomass distribution of plants and microbes, and the nutrient content and cycling in different ecosystem compartments. Results will be integrated and interpreted at the ecosystem level.
