Aims, contents and method of the course
In this hands-on course, we investigate the structural components of plants and study the organisation of cells, tissues and organs. From their shape, position and structure, we discover a direct connection with function. Arabidopsis thaliana is used as a model plant and will be discussed in all courses, but we will also broaden our knowledge towards specific functions and ecology. We use modern methods of tissue culture, analysis of mutants, selective dyes, histology and microscopy to investigate the structure and ultrastructure of plants.

Presence, engagement, written lab journal/protocol, drawings, final exam (written).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
After this hands-on course, the students have a thorough overview on basic structural processes. They can describe the structural composition of organisms by shape, form and position of cells, tissues and organs. Using this knowledge, students are able to address the links between structure and function. Students know the most important methods of structural biology on the morphological, histological and ultrastructural level.
Examination topics
Cultivation of plant material; discussion of plant development with mutants; hand sections; light microscopy; environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM); drawings of anatomic sections; structures-specific staining.
