Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of this seminar is to learn about and practice fundamental aspects of scientific work with regard to the formal structure of a bachelor thesis.

Contents: There will be one special topic for each unit.
For example:
-- Principles of scientific work, ethics
-- Search for literature (Where? How?) and criteria for quality assurance (several topics)
-- Formal structure of a scientific publication and thesis (several topics)
-- Layout and aesthetics
-- Figures & tables
-- Citations and references
Popular software for word processing, and management of the literature and citations.

Methods: supervised literature search in relation to the specific topics, the students acquire knowledge with regard to a topic and share this knowledge via an oral presentation (20 minutes) and handouts, finally there will be a short lecture focusing on the most relevant points.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance, active participation (questions and discussion after the presentations), oral presentation including slides and handouts, tests and quizzes.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A minimum of 51 points is required for the successful completion of the course. The single components are weighted as follows: attendance (10 points), oral presentation (30 points) with handouts (20 points), two interim tests (Citations, Abstract => 20 points each).
