Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of this course to gain a better understanding of vertebrate morphology by comparing and correlating morphological structures across major vertebrate clades. For this, dissection and detailed studies of the cranial skeleton and associated muscles as well as that of the extremities of representatives of fishes, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals will be carried out. The morphological structures subsequently will be analysed in an evolutionary framework to distinguish between plesiomorphic and derived conditions and to understand evolutionary trait changes.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Oral presentation (25%)
- scientific illustrations of essential skeletal elements and associated muscles of the skull and extremities (50%)
- final group discussion of the results in an evolutionary context (25%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
