Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Using the cnidarians Hydra and Nematostella, we will perform a selection of experiments in the field of cell- and developmental biology: isolation of RNA, cDNA, PCR, cloning of candidate genes, generation of probes and in situ hybridisation of whole mounts with several genes and different developmental stages. In addition, we will address the function of signalling pathways (FGF, Wnt) during the development of Nematostella using chemical inhibitors, gene expression analysis and antibody stainings. Classical transplantation experiments will demonstrate basic principles of developmental biology such as gradients, activator-inhibitor systems and positional information along a body axis.

Assessment and permitted materials

The grade will consist of three subgrades: 1 short oral exam on the theoretical foundations of the molecular biology experiments (25%), 1 grade on the general contribution during the course (25%) and 1 grade on the report (50%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A bachelor degree is a prerequisite for attending this course. In case there are more applicants than available places, preference will be given to students of the Master of Genetics and Developmental Biology, or those with theoretical knowledge in Molecular Developmental Biology, and practical knowledge in Molecular Biology and / or in zoological-microscopical courses.

Examination topics

The course will be taught in English.
