Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Since the advent of the genome area, bioinformatics has developed to an essential discipline for the analysis of biomolecular data. This lecture provides an overview on bioinformatics methods for the analysis of prokaryotic genomes, metagenomes and metatranscriptomes. Both established methods and tools, e.g. for gene prediction or functional and structural classification of proteins, and newly developed methods, e.g. for inferring functions from genomic associations, will be explained and discussed. Practical exercises will demonstrate the application of selected software tools to typical problems.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Understanding typical problems in microbial genomics, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. Application of bioinformatic methods for solving these problems and interpretation of the results in the biological context.

Examination topics

Presentation and discussion of selected topics. Lecture in German with english material. Homework exercises.

Reading list

Will be provided electronically during the lecture.
