300416 PP Survey of bird communities in floodplain forests (2010W)
Continuous assessment of course work
Labels
The Danube floodplains east of Vienna represent one of the last remaining vast stretches of floodplain forests in Central Europe. While the community of breeding birds of such floodplain forests is relatively well known, in the framework of this field course we will study the importance of different types of floodplain forests for wintering birds.

Assessment and permitted materials
Report and short oral presentation
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
In this case study at Donau-Auen National Park in the vicinity of Orth an der Donau point counts will be used to survey bird communities of non-flooded and frequently flooded forests. Subsequently, a comprehensive statistical analysis will be conducted to quantify to what extent species richness and species composition differ between both forest types.
Examination topics
The main goals are to gain skills in field identification of winter birds, to exercise methods for quantitatively surveying bird communities and to learn how to apply adequate statistical analyses using univariate and multivariate tests.
