Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Explore common freshwater algae in Austrian lakes! Based on the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), the course teaches methods for determining water quality using planktonic algae by light microscopy. In 3 sections: 1. Taxonomy introduction, 2. Practical guidance for identification (mainly using live samples) and quantitative analysis in counting chambers for biovolume determination using the Utermöhl technique, 3. Lake assessment according to EU-WRRL. Additionally: sampling on the Alte Donau (Vienna) and construction of our own microscopic counting chamber for phytoplankton samples. Step-by-step statistical methods validation and Excel templates provided. Practical and goal-oriented.
Assessment and permitted materials
The content of the exams is covered during the algae course. Permitted during examination: Handwritten course notes.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students must be present (max. 3 days absent). Assessment: Two 10-minute written exams (15% each) on taxonomy and biovolume determination. Active course participation counts for 30%. A 30-minute written final test (40%).Evaluation standards
0-49 points: insufficient (failed)
50-61 points: sufficient (4)
62-74 points: satisfactory (3)
