Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Advanced topics in molecular population genetics. The course will havea short introductory segment, consisting of 2-3 sessions, includinglectures and worked examples. The remainder of the course will consist ofcoverage of 5-7 advanced topics in molecular population genetics, witheach topic spanning 2-3 weeks. Each topic will be covered by a differentinstructor, who will briefly introduce the topic, and assign papers fordiscussion at the next meeting. Students will be required to write shortessays on the week’s reading and to take turns leading the discussion.Examples of topics include:Speciation: theory and dataExperimental EvolutionComplex TraitsGenome EvolutionCourse assessment: Evaluation of essays and course participation. ?Reading: Scientific papers, TBA.Prerequisites: An introductory course in evolutionary genetics. May beany of:300012 VO Modeling in Evolutionary Biology, Biology, Uni WienLecture Mathematical population genetics, Mathematics, Uni WienPrinciples of Evolution, IST Austria094011 VO Basic course for PhD students (Population Genetics Introductorycourse), Vetmeduni ViennaAlternatively, please contact one of the instructors for a list ofmaterial that can be worked through PRIOR to the start of the course. Please note that working through this material will likely take at least6-8 weeks, so ask for this material as soon as possible.
Assessment and permitted materials
Compulsory attendance; the evaluation consists of different performances: quality and completeness of the seminar presentation, active participation in the scientific discussion of the presented publications, written records (the percentage of the subgrades will be announced by the course leader); each of the subgrades must have a positive evaluation.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Understanding the process of molecular evolution, through criticalreading of key papers.
