Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is a training in basic biometric procedures (e.g. measurement error, error propagation, data entry, data formats, spreadsheet programs, Student's t-test, transformation of data, ANOVA - simple analysis of variance, measurements of lengths and areas, Buffon's needle problem and dot counting method, fractal dimensions). It is intended that short representations of the theoretical principles will be followed immediately by the practical working (' learning by doing'; preferred computer package: Openoffice calc). The seminar is designed for beginning students of biology with basic knowledge in biometrics. Additional knowledge in biometrics, mathematics as well as computer programming, and the option to use one's own portable computer (e.g. notebook, netbook) would be preferable and helpful.

Assessment and permitted materials

Controlling of cooperation during training courses -
Grading system: number of successfully completed courses = final grade
4 courses = grade 4
5 courses = grade 3
6 courses = grade 2
> 6 courses = grade 1
