Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Course participants will investigate ecological gradients in tropical ecosystems by studying two different groups of indicator organisms (butterflies and birds). The focus will be on natural factors (altitudinal zonation) as well as on effects of human disturbance (primary vs. secondary rainforests). Study locations include major terrestrial neotropical ecosystems such as mangroves, lowland forest, mountain rainforest and the forest-free Paramo vegetation at high altitudes. The human impact on the assemblages of a lowland rainforest will be studied in one of the most species rich forests of Central America in the vicinity of the research station La Gamba.
