Aims, contents and method of the course

Topics to be covered include:
1. The concept of biodiversity, its levels (genetic, species, phylogenetic, functional) and spatial dimensions
2. Measuring biodiversity
3. Evolution and history of diversity of life on Earth
4. Large-scale diversity patterns and principles of macro-ecology
5. Contemporary local and landscape scale patterns and processes: neutral processes; (dispersal), niche partitioning & biotic interactions (including meta-population, community and meta-community ecology)
6. Biodiversity, ecosystem function and ecosystem services
7. The future of biodiversity: global change, threats and conservation issues

Assessment and permitted materials

Examination in writing; 6 open questions, maximum 30 points to be reached. No personal notes, literature, or electronic devices may be used during the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

50% of points (maximum: 30 points) need to be achieved to pass the exam.
Grading scale: >26.5 points = 1; 22.5-26.5 points = 2; 18.75-22.5 points = 3; 15.0-18.5 points = 4; <15 points = 5.
