Aims, contents and method of the course
Practical course to learn cell biological techniques such as propagating mammalian cells under sterile conditions, cell culture techniques, transfection, fixation and staining of cells, flow cytometry, phase contrast, immunofluorescence and time lapse microscopy and to analyze the basic behavior of cells during the cell cycle, mitosis, differentiation, apoptosis, and the analysis of the cytoskeleton. Special attention is given to (semi)quantitative analysis of cellular physiology, image processing and research data management and presentation.
Assessment and permitted materials
The evaluation is based on 3 sub grades:
1) Active participation in conducting the experiments and knowledge and understanding of the details of the experimental proceedings; this features with 50% in the final grade.
2) A written report of the experiments conducted and the results obtained, to be submitted within 1 month of the end of the course; this features with 25% in the final grade.
3) A written exam on the last day of the course; this features with 25% in the final grade.
Minimal requirement for the positive evaluation of the exam: 62.5% of the attainable points.
Language of the exam: German or English if needed.
Tools permitted at the exam: pocket calculator.
