Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Student acquire the basic techniques of organic synthesis and analytics. Upgrading the comprehension of the chemistry of amino acids, peptides (and proteins) and carbohydrates.

Content: reactions of carbonyl compounds, amino acid synthesis, protecting groups of peptide synthesis, synthesis of dipeptides, reactivity of amino acid active esters, isolation of natural products, titration, UV-Vis spectroscopy and thin layer chromatography as analytical techniques, kinetic measurements, handling of small substance amounts.
The accompanying lecture deals with the following subjects: laboratory security, laboratory techniques, organic analytics, amino acids and peptides, carbohydrates, nuclei acids, heterocycles and lipids.

Methods: lab course and accompanying lecture

Assessment and permitted materials

Compulsory attendance; the evaluation consists of different performances: active participation and results obtained, written report, theoretical knowledge including final exam.
permitted material for the practical work: handout (Skriptum), own notes, computer, internet, calculator, questions to the supervisors.
permitted material for the written tests: calculator.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements for passing the course: positive execution of all experiments, sufficient protocol, positive final exam.
Assessment criteria: practical work (active participation, experiments, protocol) 50%, final exam 50%.
